Summary of Catching Fire:
The story starts as Katniss and Peeta begin their Victory Tour celebration and then head home to District 12. Unbelievably, they share the title as the official victors of the 74th Hunger Games! Happily ever after, right? Not so fast... The Capitol will not easily forget how Katniss outsmarted the Gamemakers to ensure Peeta's survival, along with her own. After all, there's only supposed to be one victor in the games. Was her action an act of desperation or an open act of defiance against the Capitol? Rebellion is on the rise in the poorer districts. Plus, Katniss has to sort out her feelings about Peeta, her new friend (and fiance?), and Gale, her old hunting partner... Has Katniss changed much? Will Gale even recognize her? With the 75th Annual Hunger Games (or the Quarter Quell) approaching, there are sure to be a few surprises in store!Questions...
So, what did you think of Catching Fire? Did it live up to your expectations? Favorite parts? Were you surprised by anything? Gale or Peeta... Peeta or Gale? District 13?!! What are your predictions for the third book, The Mockingjay? And finally, here's the Catching Fire book trailer:

14 COMMENTS!:
Okay, we're ready for your comments! Wow, I get to add the first one. :)
Team Peeta or Team Gale? I feel like I still don't know enough about Gale, so I'm pleading Uncomitted Indecision on this one. For now. Maybe.
hahaha. i can't help but be team gale. they have such a history, and even though peeta and katniss went through some intense stuff together in the past two books, i don't know if they're really meant to be together. UGH. i need to read these books again before the next one comes out.
Is there going to be a hunger games movie?? imdb says one is "in development" but doesn't have any information besides that... do you think the book will translate well into a movie?
I just have to ask. Big spoiler alert! Was anyone surprised by Katniss and Peeta having to return to compete in the games for a second time? I didn't think they'd make a clean getaway from the Capitol, but I was pretty suprised that they actually had to endure the games AGAIN. Also, I felt really bad for Cinna- I liked his character a lot and it seems like he's dead. I'm trying to remember--didn't the Capitol kill him right before Katniss entered the Quarter Quell?
@ Michelle: I did hear that there's a movie coming out, but I don't know when. I hope they do the story justice!
I'm Team Peeta all the way :)
I was certainly surprised when they went back into the Games. I remember gasping out loud and moaning when I read that part and since I was in the car at the time, when someone asked me what was wrong I started ranting about the Capitol lol
I do like Cinna and I'm hoping he didn't die. All Katniss saw was them beating him up and his head was bleeding. Hopefully, he was just badly injuried *crosses fingers*
I did hear that there was a movie coming out next summer but never heard anything else about it. Have anyone else heard anything?
Jenn
So I think I'm Team Peeta...but like Tracie said, I wish I knew more about Gale. Maybe that would sway my decision. But after all Peeta has done for Katniss, it is clear that he really loves her and that Katniss could be really happy with him. I have a feeling this will become material for a huge conflict in book 3. :P
With today's movie technology & CGI, I don't see how this /wouldn't/ be a good movie! Who do you think they might cast for the characters?
Jenn--oh good, maybe Cinna wasn't killed after all. I had a hunch there was more to his character in the first book, so maybe he'll have a role in the third book.
Lia, for the movie, I hope they go with some unknown or new actors. That would be my preference... But, fans might want their favorite celebrities to play certain characters. That's okay, too...I agree with you that relationships between Gale/Peeta/Katniss will play a large role in the final book. While Gale didn't have a big role in Book 2, I'm hoping that we'll learn more about him in the next book. Gale and Katniss seem like a more natural pair to me than Peeta and Katniss (even though Peeta is very devoted). :) I don't know--it's a tough call.
What do you think about the Capitol citizens?
Oh, I was also surprised to find out that Haymitch won the previous Quarter Quell.
the capitol citizens remind me of hollywood...but to an intense extreme.
As for their active acceptance of the hunger games (they treat it like it's the olympics), and their complete devotion to materialism and ostentation - I thought it was completely believable. It reminded me of Ancient Rome and many other countries where the gap between rich and poor becomes so polarized that the rich just seem...ridiculous and almost evil in their acceptance of the dramatic inequalities of their society.
But i don't think they're actually evil. are they naive? brainwashed? too content to change the way things are? believe they can't really stand up to the government? or is their behavior what anyone would do in that society?
I could not have said it better, Michelle! The Capitol citizens are so repulsive to me, yet--even though I want to judge and condemn them and say, "that's not me" or "that's not us," history shows that people are easily capable of turning their backs on atrocity or even being willing participants. Not even history--present day! And our fascination with celebrities and "infotainment" reminds me that we are not so different from the Capitol citizens.
Has anyone heard of the book Reality Hunger? I love this quote: "Our culture is obsessed with real events because we experience hardly any." Why is reality TV so popular?
Ok well im team gale for sure. Also im pretty surte peetas not deador at least it doest say he just got capturededby the goverment instead of gale.
Agreed, ducks go moo! (HI!) I'm positive that Peeta is still alive. My guess for the next book: Katniss and Gale will reunite during the rebellion (headquarters located in District 13?), and they'll try to rescue Peeta. BUT... I could be totally wrong. So don't quote me on that. :)
i think the same thing
then they totlly distroy or try to destroy the capital
Rachna
Michelle, I think the best characterization of the capitol citizens is that they are "too content to change the way things are". When a group is in a position of stability and wealth like that, there is no reason for them to want to revolutionize or
attempt to equalize society.
If people live lives where they aren't exposed to hardship or want, then I would argue that they're not truly "living" at all.
Megan, the quote from "Reality Hunger" is really interesting. It is so sad that in our society we fill our lives with meaningless information, only to find out that we haven't accomplished anything worthwhile at all.
Jenn - I hope Cinna's still alive! He played such an interesting role.
A comment on the book in general - I love when books have a great story line as well as a political commentary or real-world application. It's funny how fictional books often seem to have the most correlation to our world.
Lia, I agree- sometimes people forget how powerful fiction can be. While nonfiction is a great testament to the truth and facts, fiction can also be just as true to reality.
