When her parents decide to move to Austin, Texas, she thinks of a creative plan. Since Maggie is really upset and misses everyone in Oregon, she decides not to be popular anymore. She brings weird things to school so people won’t be attracted to her, like carrying around a Star Wars lunch box. Or wearing a jumpsuit--you get the picture. After awhile her "not being popular" campaign starts having the opposite effect. Everyone starts copying her!
It’s really hard to leave your friends behind. Sometimes all we want to do is go back to the good times we had with our best friends, and just to go back to the place where we were most comfortable.
I think the author Ms. Ziegler did a pretty good job with this novel. She could’ve done a better job with the plot line, because the story is too slow and predictable at times. Other than that, the book is hilarious. I would recommend this book because it gives you a great laugh.
Librarian's note: For another quirky heroine who doesn't care if she fits in with the in crowd, pick up Stargirl and Love, Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. Also try How to Be Popular by Meg Cabot.
Want to be unpopular? Here are a few of Maggie's guidelines:
- Unpopularity is a state of mind. Feel nerdy. Think uncool thoughts.
- To be unpopular, you must look the part. Remember four words: “plastic flowered swim cap.”
- You must worship all that is totally and tragically unhip. Disco is not dead.
